Advantages and Disadvantages of EPO's
California EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization)
Like an HMO, this group insurance has its own network of health care providers and usually requires members to choose a primary care physician, or PCP.
Advantages:
- You may choose to see any health care providers within the network.
- Referrals from your PCP to network specialists are easier to obtain.
- Costs for EPO’s are generally lower than for HMO’s.
- No forms to complete.
Disadvantages:
- You are not reimbursed for non-network health care.
- EPO networks are usually smaller than HMO or PPO networks.
