Participation in California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program Up in 2009

February 3, 2010 – The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (CLCA) exists to help in-need California residents purchase the automobile liability insurance they need to protect themselves from risk and to obey California law. The program has seen an 18.9 percent increase in utilization in 2009 as compared to 2008, according to an announcement by Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner who is pleased with the change.

Poizner points out that every resident of California is required to carry automobile insurance, and admits that “in these tough economic times . . . there is a temptation to cut costs” by driving without insurance. That residents are turning in increasing numbers to the CLCA instead of endangering the fortunes of themselves and others by driving without insurance is seen by him as some good news. According to statistics from the California Department of Insurance, there were about 7,500 approved applications to the CLCA for the year 2009, over one-thousand more than in 2008.

Is the CLCA right for you? It might be a good choice if you meet the conditions of the program. The program requires that applicants be at least 19 years old, continuously licensed for 3 years, and must have no more than one at-fault property damage accident or one point for a moving violation over the previous three years. Additionally, the driver must have no at-fault accidents involving bodily injury or death in that same period, and no felony or misdemeanor convictions for violations of the Vehicle Code. Income limits and more information on other regulations may be found at www.insurance.ca.gov/lowcost.
